Scientific Seminar at CNR-ICMATE
On 16 July 2026, a scientific seminar was held at CNR-ICMATE in Milan, bringing together researchers working on advanced cast irons, microstructural characterization and innovative cast-metal composites.
The first presentation, entitled “Atomic-Scale Investigation of Graphite Nodule Morphology Effects on the Mechanical Behaviour of Ductile Iron,” was delivered by Chen-Chen Zhao from the College of Mechanical Engineering, Taiyuan University of Technology, Taiyuan, Shanxi, P.R. China. The lecture focused on atomistic modelling of ductile iron, with particular emphasis on how the morphology of graphite nodules influences local stress distribution, deformation mechanisms and the mechanical response of the surrounding metallic matrix. The presented modelling approach provided insight into material behaviour at the atomic scale and contributed to a better understanding of the relationship between graphite morphology and the mechanical properties of ductile iron.
The second lecture, “In-Situ TiC Carbide-Reinforced Si–Mo Cast Iron Composite – Synthesis, Microstructure, and Properties,” was given by Jan Marosz from AGH University of Krakow, Poland. The presentation focused on the development of an innovative Si–Mo cast iron composite reinforced with in-situ-formed TiC carbides, including its synthesis route, microstructural characteristics and resulting properties.
Both presentations were followed by an engaging scientific discussion. The participants exchanged views on the mechanisms governing the mechanical behaviour of ductile iron, advanced methods of microstructural analysis, the formation and distribution of carbide reinforcements, and the potential industrial applications of the investigated materials. The seminar also provided an opportunity to identify common research interests and discuss possibilities for further international scientific cooperation.
